Icons are extremely recognizable in today’s world, with icons for apps, restaurants, and other well-known media outlets being recognizable the moment you see them. However, the icons that we see today often weren’t the first ones that graced our screens when the apps were first launched.
Logos change due to the company changing. If the logo is outdated or too detailed, then it is often updated to keep the interest of the audience. Also, if a new service is being offered by the company, then they often change the logos to reflect that. Sometimes it can be as simple as changing their old logos by one or two words to give completely new meaning to the company.
Logo changing is something that can be met with public outcry or support, and if the designs are too much of a change then the company might even revert back to the old one.
Maybe the old app designs are lucky enough to get new Instagram followers or purchased likes started the right buzz to get the spotlight, but until then we’ll take a look at some of the changes that have occurred to our favourite social media apps.
At first, Facebook wasn’t much of an icon environment. It just looked like a pixel image of someone’s face when it was simply The Facebook. However, The Facebook soon became Facebook and the icon of the blue square with the white f inside debuted. Soon it became the icon that everyone recognized, and it’s remained the same ever since.
Twitter went through the biggest change, with the first icon being a tiny bird facing left. The bird also had legs. However, the icon was changed to face right and the legs were removed. It became much more minimalistic until a third change happened.
Then the little bird became much more detailed, with legs, eyes, and more hair. He almost looked like something out of a cartoon, and it was rather adorable. However, it was soon changed again to be minimalistic again, and that led to the logo we see today, just a little bird that is only blue with no details.
Instagram’s logo has gone through the most changes, with the original logo looking like a massive camera that rested on the screen. It was a little ugly (at least by modern standards) but it got the job done until the icon designer said it wasn’t good enough for all they wanted the app to be. A new logo was designed soon after.
This logo kept the camera feel, but made it a bit smaller and more compact, still showing off the abbreviated name and the rainbow stripes that represented all the filters on the app. It was the logo for several years until it was changed to a pink logo that looks nothing like the original. It almost looks like the front of a camera if you squint, but that didn’t stop the internet from freaking out over it.
